PETRA COX

Petra Cox is an artist who creates one of a kind sculptures by recycling waste material. She prefers working with residual products and parts of second-hand objects. She is able to see the beauty and possibilities of these things and redefine their purpose. As Petra states it: "By using a variety of materials (including waste) I replace the material’s original purpose for a new, surprising one. I want to challenge the spectator to look over and over again and start a journey of discovery and wondering." She has always had a profound love for nature, in particular for animals.Due to her former profession as a veterinarian she learned to “see with her hands and listen with her eyes.” These unique qualities enable her to create her own way of sculpting. She strives for beauty in her sculptures as well as a feeling of astonishment from- and a connection with the spectator.Making sculptures helps Petra in processing her feelings and thoughts that arise during memorable moments in her life. Doing so enables her to come to a better understanding and place of acceptance for those emotions. “All of my sculptures stand for significant moments in my life. I hope that by observing my sculptures, the spectator finds a common ground between my emotional world and his or her own. Moreover, I hope that this moment will lead to embracement of the sculpture and a connection with the reflection it stands for. Then, the sculpture will become an everlasting reflection of that connection .“ Petra is always searching for new ways to express her world of inner thoughts. Through her series Reflections she hopes to capture the spectator’s attention and to invite them on her journey to make sense of our subconsciousness.
